Phydra Wants You To “Pay Attention” On Latest EP Via Wormhole Music

Written by: Dan Warren

In a scene that often feels oversaturated with artists chasing trends and attempting to beat difficult social media algorithms, it can be easy to forget that there are still a number of talented producers that ignore the noise, create art for themselves, and share it with others. One of those artists is Portland, Oregon-based Alec Hummel, better known as Phydra.

A master of his craft – Phydra is known for his heavy low-end and dark, evolving basslines, which create a tastefully-consuming atmosphere in his productions. His hard-hitting soundscapes have graced well-respected labels such as Deep, Dark & Dangerous, Wormhole Music, Street Ritual, Aspire Higher, The Rust Music, and several more. Phydra has also brought these sounds to signature events like Infrasound Equinox and The Untz Festival (this year will actually be his fourth year in a row playing the event!).

Outside of producing and DJing, Phydra is also the Head of A&R at Wavecraft Collective, a label that has been championing underground sounds since 2017. In this role he conducts most of the artist outreach and signs new releases to the label. He also co-hosts Wavecraft’s feedback streams on Twitch — these streams are a great opportunity for up-and-coming producers to submit their works in progress, receive quality feedback and connect with other like-minded artists.

Towards the end of March, Phydra released his Pay Attention EP on the aforementioned Wormhole Music Group, his sophomore EP on the label. This four-track project is the latest showcase of Phydra’s signature dark and heavy sounds that truly shake you down to your core.

The Pay Attention EP begins with “Contusion,” a slow-burning banger that resembles stepping into a dark, pulsating void. It’s a perfect start to the EP as it creeps up on us with eerie atmospheres, setting the stage before entering distorted, sonic destruction.

Next up is “EXTORTION,” a sinister collaboration with west coast hitman POP THA TRUNK. This track sends us further into the bass labyrinth that Phydra has established with its well-utilized vocal samples and rattling low-end. It truly demands a proper sound system to do it justice.

Jumping into the second half of the EP, Phydra is making sure that we “Pay Attention” on the title track. A longer, hypnotic intro allows us to catch our breath before jumping back in with head-spinning sound design that hits us from all angles. The call-and-response that he uses, combined with stellar automation, packs a punch as we continue on through Phydra’s world.

The Pay Attention EP closes with a clever outro in “Atlas.” The track begins on a more hopeful tone with dreamy synths and jungle-inspired breaks that have us thinking we may have escaped Phydra’s bass chamber. Think again, though, as the track shifts back into a foreboding environment one last time. This epic finale is where Phydra is at his most cinematic, leaving listeners in a dystopian sci-fi that’s nearly impossible to turn away from.

The Pay Attention EP is a reminder that Phydra is operating in a league of his own when it comes to dangerously well-crafted bass music. Whether it’s in the realm of 140/dubstep, half time, or drum & bass, Phydra always seems to find a way to stay true to his signature sound that leaves us in awe.
